Achievements & Partners

Improved retention and recruitment of community health/home support workers through a program designed to address barriers and generate solutions for better work environments.

Created better service for people living with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) through the design and delivery of an optimal service delivery model consisting of peer support groups for patients, as well as self-management training for members of multidisciplinary Integrated Health Networks within the Vancouver Island Health Authority.

Presented the BC experience and success with the Expanded Chronic Care Model to members of an international corporation (gathered in Japan) as an approach for their consideration in the design and implementation of renal services worldwide.

Advanced pain care for British Columbians by developing a "Framework for Action for People Living with Chronic Pain in British Columbia," that brings stakeholders together under one vision and four "pillars," including: pain education for health providers, self-management for pain patients, a pain website for patients and providers, and a chronic pain clinical practice guideline and patient registry.

Spearheaded a program to improve physician practice leading to better health for people living with respiratory illness, as described in the “COPD Service Framework for British Columbia.”

Consolidated best-practice approaches for people living with metabolic syndrome in the “BC Metabolic Syndrome Program Charter,” featuring an interdisciplinary, nurse-managed program where patients work in partnership with healthcare providers to reduce risk for chronic disease.

Sought to improve care for people living with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis and osteoporosis in British Columbia through the development of a “service improvement framework” which establishes best-practice recommendations for patients, health providers, community agencies and governments.

Encouraged community athletes to “breath-free” through recommendations set forth in a “Tobacco-Free Sports Plan for BC,” which draws upon the international “no-smoking” experience, as well as expertise from sports and healthy-living leaders in British Columbia.

Worked to coordinate services for people living with HIV and AIDS through community development, grant writing, and preparation of the “Collaborative Service Plan for HIV & AIDS,” which provides a road map for service providers to work collaboratively to meet the needs of individuals and communities affected by HIV and AIDS.

Increased awareness of the effects of sun exposure and skin cancer prevention through development of the “Sun Awareness & Skin Cancer Prevention Strategy for British Columbia,” drawing upon a review of the international experience and consultations with cancer prevention leaders in British Columbia.

Generated a plan to reduce the risk of heart disease, as presented in the “Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Strategy for BC,” which describes best-practice strategies and policies for the prevention of heart conditions based on extensive information-gathering from international, national and provincial agencies and leaders.
